LITTER CONTROL

Litter Control is one of the biggest challenges facing any community and Tidy Towns groups throughout the country spend a lot of time and effort cleaning up illegally disposed of litter and waste.

Do you know?

Do you know?

  • That Dromiskin achieved gold medal status for the first time ever in Louth County Council’s litter league in the 2011 Louth Looking Good awards
  • That this involved a huge effort from a small number of people including the hard working Community Employment Scheme who were required to do daily litter pick-ups in the village to deal with the extent of the litter problem
  • That this effort had to be supplemented by voluntary clean-ups at weekends and in the evenings

Do you know?

  • That if you live within the lower speed limit signs in a town or village YOU are responsible for litter control outside your property. You may think its unfair but it is the law so if you see it pick it up and pop it in the bin

Do you know?

  • That litter bins in the village were completely up-graded recently but are still not being used properly.
  • There are many litter black spots in the village including beside the Viking Boat feature so please use the bins properly at this location

Do you know?

  • That even one cigarette butt is regarded as litter and subject to a fine of €150
  • That cigarette related litter is a problem in the village that is being targeted by litter wardens so it is important to dispose of it properly
  • That Louth County Council has undertaken a cigarette butt awareness campaign in an effort to get the message across that cigarette butts are litter and offenders will be fined.

Do you know?

  • That dog fouling is also classified as litter and subject to the litter fine of €150
  • That Louth County Council will shortly be undertaking a dog fouling awareness campaign following which enforcement action will be taken against offenders
  • That in addition to creating litter dog fouling can pose a public health risk with serious health implications for, in particular, children coming in contact with it
  • That you should carry a pooper scooper or even a simple nappy bag with you when out walking and that you can then dispose of the material in one of the many litter bins to avoid a fine

 litter 03

Do you know?

  • That chewing gum is also regarded as litter and subject to €150 fine if carelessly disposed of in the street instead of in the bin
  • That chewing gum is one of the most difficult litter streams to deal with if improperly disposed of as it requires expensive and difficult removal by external contractors
  • Improperly disposed chewing gum damages paths and pavements quiet often requiring subsequent repair
